Brothers
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
11" x14"
Private Collection
This portrait of my two brothers, Jim and Dan, was painted from a series of photos taken at our family camp this past summer. The camp was built for fishing purposes by our great-grandfather and several of his friends in 1895, and has been passed down through the generations of our family. My brothers and I are its current caretakers. As kids, we spent hours playing on and jumping off that big rock.

Christmas Wish
Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Acrylic Paper
14" x 11"
Private Collection
In the evening on the first Sunday in December, there's a small gathering in the center of our village for the annual tree lighting ceremony and caroling, followed by hot chocolate and cookies at the Academy just a short walk away. It's a tradition that was in place long before we moved into the village some 28 years ago, and with the tree just on the other side of the road from our home, we've yet to miss this event. This year, I snapped a few photos which resulted in this painting of our daughter and son-in-law whose wish did come true. On December 21, 2007 they became first time home owners.
Congratulations Erin and Steve!

Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper

The gift giving begins!
Several of the postings appearing over the next week or so, beginning with this one, will be paintings that made their way under the Christmas trees of family members and friends. In all of the pre-holiday hustle and bustle, however, I forgot to scan a few of the pieces first (sorry Meg), so not all of the gifts will be posted here.

This painting was done from the same photo, and on the same day as the previous post, Morning Walk (#1). I lightened the background in this piece to show a bit more definition among the trees.

Teamwork
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
10" x 7"
Commission

This piece of art was also commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. After seeing Book Buddies ( previous post), Lori and her staff decided they would like a companion piece to hang along with it in their school's front office. For this second piece, Lori asked that a teacher be included. My daughter, Erin, who owns Lyrics Music Studio where she also teaches voice (located in E. Rochester, NH, ironically enough!), served as my model for the teacher. That made this piece particularly fun to work on. My challenge was to make both pieces similar in style, but not repetitive in content or composition. Using a similar color palette helped to unify the two pieces. Because both pieces are relatively small, I chose to simplify the backgrounds in order to keep the focus on the subjects in each painting.

Book Buddies
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
10" x 7"
Commission

This piece of art was commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. Her request was for a small piece of art to hang in the front office that would represent students working or playing together in some way. Since reading is both pleasurable, and a means of accomplishing school work, it seemed to be the perfect choice...hence, Book Buddies.

Frozen in Time
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
24" x 8"
(framed dimensions)
Sold
I was intrigued with the colors in a photo taken from the deck of our house after our first big snowstorm on December 3, 2007. Although this painting doesn't match the treeline in our yard, the colors were what I was interested in working with. I loved the deep greens set against the pinks and purples of the bare trees in the background.
