A little departure from the Grand Canyon for now. I just can't ignore the New England colors this time of year! This painting has a hint of gold throughout that shimmers slightly when the light hits it just right. Unfortunately, that bit of luster doesn't show on this post. Painted on paste paper, this piece is 6"x6" in size and is matted uniquely in a large frame. I had fun with it!

Raven Haven
Mixed Media on Arches Cover Paper
29" x 29"
(framed dimensions)
Private Collection

While at the Grand Canyon, Steve and I happened upon this raven. He sat perched on this branch for a very long time, turning its head this way and that just as a model might during a photo shoot. It allowed us to move quite close. I did so while snapping photo after photo. I'm thinking he was just begging to be painted, and I was happy to oblige.

Yee-up! I'm still enjoying painting these Grand Canyon scenes. Much more inspiration still left to come. This gentleman was standing off to the side watching with great interest as the mules were readied for the trip down into the canyon. I later realized he was one of the riders. It was his attire that caught my attention. I love the well worn hat and the pop of color in the bandana (which, unfortunately, appears more orange than red in the post).

Yet another Grand Canyon inspired piece, and my first real attempt at painting a mule. A bit of a challenge, but I'm happy with the results. It's funny, though...my favorite part of this painting is the ground where all of the colors of the paste paper worked its magic (and where I didn't happen to do any painting at all, short of the paste paper itself). I'm glad I was able to stop myself from working over this section. It's that delicate balance of knowing when to quit, and the fun of painting on this surface.

This is a painting of a guide just prior to his departure into the canyon on a daylong mule ride. When I snapped the reference photo, I was certain he was taking a pinch of chewing tobacco. It seemed like such a cowboy thing to do. Later, when I zoomed in on the photo, I discovered he was actually snacking on Oreo cookies. HA! Now that's my kind of guide!

Steve and I spent several days at the Grand Canyon this past spring. As you can imagine, I took many, many reference photos during our stay. Some of my favorites are of a group preparing for an early morning mule ride down the Bright Angel trail on the South Rim. This series of photos will most certainly inspire more paintings.

This is a painting I originally worked out on a piece of paste paper I had previously created. I wasn't all that taken with the painting when I finished, so I set it aside for a second look at another time. A few weeks later, I happened upon it and decided I had nothing to lose by doing a little reworking. I applied an additional coat of the paste, and worked in more textures and colors. It was fun just to play with this a bit, and I'm surprisingly pleased with the end result this time around.

This piece is made up of two small paintings (3" x 2.5" each) that are matted together vertically (a bit blurry here, since I scanned them with the mat). The images were from a photo I took last summer while kayaking on Crystal Lake in New Hampshire. Steve and I spent a good part of the afternoon paddling about with a flock of geese in the marsh on the other side of Nat's Bridge. Later in the day, they flew overhead in a 'V' formation. I selected two to paint here.

I decided to let the texture of the paste paper give the illusion of a mat for this piece. I chose a dark frame that has soft metalic borders around the outside and inside edges. I replicated that on the paper using iridescent acrylic paint, and then masked that area off and began painting. It was quite exciting to see it all come together once the tape was removed and the painting was fit into the frame. The flow of the lines in the textured mat area seems to add a nice bit of energy to the painting.

Salmon Falls Friends of Music is a group of talented musicians who gather once a month for an evening of music. Their last get together was hosted by good friends of mine, and they were kind enough to invite me to share in the event (I was there strictly as an appreciator of music). I brought along my camera and snapped a few photos to use for reference back in my studio. This particular painting is of Craig Werth, an amazingly talented musician www.craigwerth.com . I have two of his music CDs. I played them both while working on this painting. What a treat...

Yet another round of playing with the paste paper backgrounds. I'm having fun with these, so you can expect many more! This one started out as a full sheet of paper. This past weekend I spent some time experimenting with a technique called Paste Paper. This is a mix of paint and paste (a variety of types can be used - I chose to use what is essentially a wall paper paste). The colored mixture is brushed on paper and then textured using any number of items from around the house. The ratio of paint to paste is one that I had to play with a bit before achieving any success, but it was fun once I got the hang of it. And, today I decided to try using one of the finished paste papers as a foundation for this painting. I let the textures of the piece and my imagination determine the direction of the painting. What a relaxing way to create...

I came across a wooden frame that I had purchased a while back. It included a mat with three individual openings. I had planned on discarding the mat and just using the frame. When I looked it over this morning, however, the idea of painting one piece that flowed from section to section intrigued me. I quickly spread out two pieces of fabric from a bin of old quilting supplies, then rolled some marbles on top...and began painting!

I so enjoyed the color palette used in creating Sleigh Bells Ring (posted on 12/31/08), that I decided to try working with it again. My husband's boots seemed a good choice of subject. The colors in the actual painting are a bit more muted than they appear here, giving the overall piece a softer look. But, I think you can get the general idea of what I was going for...

To paint this piece, I hung a strand of sleigh bells from the light that is clamped to the top of my easel. For lighting purposes this idea worked great. However, every time my brush pushed against the painting surface it would wiggle the easel which in turn would cause the sleigh bells to ring. I hadn't counted on this, but it sure made for a joyful painting experience, as well as an obvious title choice!

My daughter, Meg, had her car stolen in Montreal last June. Among the contents of the car was a treasured marble that once belonged to my Dad. Hopefully, this marble will be...for keeps.

An artist friend and I each purchased an unusual 13 inch square silver frame, with an opening just large enough for a 3.5 inch square painting. There is no mat...just a whole lot of decorative silver! Our challenge, as we saw it, was to individually choose a subject managable enough for the small working size, yet bold enough so as not to be swallowed up by the ornateness of the frame. This water lily was my choice. It was painted from a series of reference photo I took this past summer while kayaking on Crystal Lake in New Hampshire.

Our youngest daughter, Meg, is a news videographer for WPTZ, an NBC affiliate in Plattsburg, New York. I had the luxury of working on this portrait of her while listening to some great live music from our neighbor, Sam. He was home recently to work on a recording with some of his band mates. Sam and my two daughters grew up together in this neighborhood. They don't get the chance to see each other often any more, so it was fun for me to connect them for a bit through his music and my paintbrush. It sure brought back a ton of good memories...

A year or so ago I took my first ride on a four wheeler. It was an experience that changed my view of such vehicles. As we bumped along deep into the woods, I was able to see first hand why many people find this pastime so appealing. I saw surrounding areas that I have never taken notice of before as we made our way along narrow, well disguised trails. As always, I had my camera on hand. I worked from a series of photos to recreate the day here.

Interestingly enough, this painting began as a landscape. Within several minutes of painting time, however, I knew it was not meant to be. I quickly grabbed a damp cloth and wiped it down leaving a soft blue wash. Tacked up on my studio wall was a photo I had snapped of our oldest daughter, Erin, during one of her recent performances. Using that for reference, I knew as soon as I resumed painting that I had found the subject meant for this canvas.

This is a tissue paper collage I had started years ago. I came across it recently and decided to just cut loose and have fun with it. I didn't have any set plans when I began adding layers of acrylic paint and colored pencil. My intent was to just let things unfold as I went along, and to play a bit...which I did!

Snow for Sadie
Acrylic on paper
5" x 7"
Private Collection
Recently, I was the very lucky recipient of a wonderfully handcrafted 'snow' sculpture from a young artist friend of mine. It holds a place of honor in my studio where, despite the heat, it has yet to melt! As a thank-you, I offered my snow person interpretation in return.

These barns are among many nestled in on the land belonging to my brother and sister-in-law's family in Alstead, NH. The property, once known as the Vilas Estate, is beautifully maintained making it a great source for artistic inspiration. Many of the upcoming landscape paintings will be of views captured there on a recent visit.

This small abandoned building sits up the road from where we live. I've always wondered about the history of it, as well as the people who once made it their home so long ago. To me, even in its current state of disrepair, it still has a quaintness to it.

Brothers
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
11" x14"
Private Collection
This portrait of my two brothers, Jim and Dan, was painted from a series of photos taken at our family camp this past summer. The camp was built for fishing purposes by our great-grandfather and several of his friends in 1895, and has been passed down through the generations of our family. My brothers and I are its current caretakers. As kids, we spent hours playing on and jumping off that big rock.

Christmas Wish
Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Acrylic Paper
14" x 11"
Private Collection
In the evening on the first Sunday in December, there's a small gathering in the center of our village for the annual tree lighting ceremony and caroling, followed by hot chocolate and cookies at the Academy just a short walk away. It's a tradition that was in place long before we moved into the village some 28 years ago, and with the tree just on the other side of the road from our home, we've yet to miss this event. This year, I snapped a few photos which resulted in this painting of our daughter and son-in-law whose wish did come true. On December 21, 2007 they became first time home owners.
Congratulations Erin and Steve!

The gift giving begins!
Several of the postings appearing over the next week or so, beginning with this one, will be paintings that made their way under the Christmas trees of family members and friends. In all of the pre-holiday hustle and bustle, however, I forgot to scan a few of the pieces first (sorry Meg), so not all of the gifts will be posted here.

Teamwork
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
10" x 7"
Commission

This piece of art was also commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. After seeing Book Buddies ( previous post), Lori and her staff decided they would like a companion piece to hang along with it in their school's front office. For this second piece, Lori asked that a teacher be included. My daughter, Erin, who owns Lyrics Music Studio where she also teaches voice (located in E. Rochester, NH, ironically enough!), served as my model for the teacher. That made this piece particularly fun to work on. My challenge was to make both pieces similar in style, but not repetitive in content or composition. Using a similar color palette helped to unify the two pieces. Because both pieces are relatively small, I chose to simplify the backgrounds in order to keep the focus on the subjects in each painting.

Book Buddies
Acrylic on Canson Montval Acrylic Paper
10" x 7"
Commission

This piece of art was commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. Her request was for a small piece of art to hang in the front office that would represent students working or playing together in some way. Since reading is both pleasurable, and a means of accomplishing school work, it seemed to be the perfect choice...hence, Book Buddies.

I was intrigued with the colors in a photo taken from the deck of our house after our first big snowstorm on December 3, 2007. Although this painting doesn't match the treeline in our yard, the colors were what I was interested in working with. I loved the deep greens set against the pinks and purples of the bare trees in the background.

I happened across this sunset as I was driving home from work on route 202 one evening in early November. Thankfully, I had my camera with me. It gave me a good reason to pull off into a vacant lot and enjoy the show.

This October sky cast some wonderful light over a farm just off Center Road in Lebanon, Maine. The clouds were very fast moving and seemed to change with each click of the camera. It was all fascinating to watch, and even more so to paint.

While visiting my daughter in upstate New York, we took a day trip into Vermont
and made our way up through the islands on Lake Champlain just in time for that long, late afternoon light. Fortunately, I had my camera, and a very patient daughter who was willing to make many stops along the way for photo ops. All of the flat planes and angles of this grouping of barns made for a fun painting to work on. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite get the pink reflected glow of the finished painting to translate as well as I wanted for this posting.

This leather marble bag belonged to my father.
Some of the marbles painted here were his as well.
Others belonged to my brother, Jim, and to me.
The sentimental value of the subject matter,
as well as all of the bright, bold colors
made painting this piece great fun!

This piece was created using the new Interactive Acrylics.
These paints are designed to allow for a longer drying time
with the option to rehydrate desired areas for additional work by spraying with water.
Interesting.
