While at the Grand Canyon, Steve and I happened upon this raven. He sat perched on this branch for a very long time, turning its head this way and that just as a model might during a photo shoot. It allowed us to move quite close. I did so while snapping photo after photo. I'm thinking he was just begging to be painted, and I was happy to oblige.

Heading OverYet another Grand Canyon inspired piece, and my first real attempt at painting a mule. A bit of a challenge, but I'm happy with the results. It's funny, though...my favorite part of this painting is the ground where all of the colors of the paste paper worked its magic (and where I didn't happen to do any painting at all, short of the paste paper itself). I'm glad I was able to stop myself from working over this section. It's that delicate balance of knowing when to quit, and the fun of painting on this surface.

I so enjoyed the color palette used in creating Sleigh Bells Ring (posted on 12/31/08), that I decided to try working with it again. My husband's boots seemed a good choice of subject. The colors in the actual painting are a bit more muted than they appear here, giving the overall piece a softer look. But, I think you can get the general idea of what I was going for...

This painting was done as a gift for my brother, Dan. He and Jim each own their own pool tables. Unbeknownst to them, I took a series of reference photos for Combo and Soft Break (below) during a stay at Dan's house a year or so ago. Dan had a hand in the naming this painting just as Jim did for his.

This was a Christmas gift for my brother, Jim, who spends much of his off time shooting pool. The colors and perspective made this a fun painting to work on. Jim helped me title the painting. A 'soft break' is a shot purposefully meant to keep the balls close together.

Our youngest daughter, Meg, is a news videographer for WPTZ, an NBC affiliate in Plattsburg, New York. I had the luxury of working on this portrait of her while listening to some great live music from our neighbor, Sam. He was home recently to work on a recording with some of his band mates. Sam and my two daughters grew up together in this neighborhood. They don't get the chance to see each other often any more, so it was fun for me to connect them for a bit through his music and my paintbrush. It sure brought back a ton of good memories...

This piece of art was also commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. After seeing Book Buddies ( previous post), Lori and her staff decided they would like a companion piece to hang along with it in their school's front office. For this second piece, Lori asked that a teacher be included. My daughter, Erin, who owns Lyrics Music Studio where she also teaches voice (located in E. Rochester, NH, ironically enough!), served as my model for the teacher. That made this piece particularly fun to work on. My challenge was to make both pieces similar in style, but not repetitive in content or composition. Using a similar color palette helped to unify the two pieces. Because both pieces are relatively small, I chose to simplify the backgrounds in order to keep the focus on the subjects in each painting.

This piece of art was commissioned by Lori Roe, Principal of the newly opened Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in Rochester, NY. Her request was for a small piece of art to hang in the front office that would represent students working or playing together in some way. Since reading is both pleasurable, and a means of accomplishing school work, it seemed to be the perfect choice...hence, Book Buddies.

I happened across this sunset as I was driving home from work on route 202 one evening in early November. Thankfully, I had my camera with me. It gave me a good reason to pull off into a vacant lot and enjoy the show.

This leather marble bag belonged to my father.
Some of the marbles painted here were his as well.
Others belonged to my brother, Jim, and to me.
The sentimental value of the subject matter,
as well as all of the bright, bold colors
made painting this piece great fun!
